The Importance of Country-focused Research to Meet Policy and Program Needs PDF Print E-mail

One of the core tenets of TREAT TB is its focus on support for research that guides and informs policy decisions at global and national levels. In an opinion piece published in the February 2010 issue of Nature, two scientists from the University of KwaZulu-Natal discuss the importance of shifting the attention of HIV/AIDS researchers in South Africa from the major focus on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic towards tailored research to meet national and local needs. The authors suggest that this transition would help develop local solutions for policy and program challenges within South Africa – which are likely to be globally applicable.
